View Full Version : ATF Madden?

SilverTalon

My random thought of the day...the new Madden comes out tomorrow and supposedly supports online franchise (so the whole shin-dig or drafts, trades and multi-year stuff) on the Xbox 360 (and probably the PS3 as well, but meh). Do we have enough people with 360s and Live accounts that would be interested in an ATF setup?

The Q&A on what the differences between the franchise and online leagues are can be found here (http://maddennfl.easports.com/blog.action?blogId=online%20franchise%201). All the online web stuff sounds like a Gryph-hook, but I think it'd be a neat thing to try.

O RLY Stoke?

And Moo: I think they're adding a lot of the subtlety that's missing from Madden like pile-pushing (they've been hawking that for a while in their ads) and fumble dog-piles where you fight for the ball rather than "oh look...random player X has the ball", but I'll let you know for sure though.

I would maybe if we have a good turn out. I have gotten a few sports games before and they don't last long. If we had a night or two dedicated to it, like Malthus (http://www.alliedtribalforces.com/member.php?username=Malthus) and Soup (http://www.soupgaming.com/), they play Wednesdays, with enough ATF people on board I would be persuaded.

And miss the opportunity to go to NC and go shopping with you for Xboxes? Merrily skipping through the aisles while singing a delightful song about chummery and friendship? Whatchu talkin' bout Stokkis?

And Gryphy, yeah...I think we'd have to do something like that (you can play outside those times if you and your opponent that week agree) but at X time, we're moving forward.

As soon as I recover from the news that we picked up Vick... o_O

The rational part of my mind says that Vick paid his debt, carried through so far on promises to be a spokesman against his former ways, has the support of people of unimpeachable moral character (Tony Dungy, among others), is going to a team that is known for a strong work ethic in a 'blue-collar' town", that McNabb and Vick are friends (Donnie Mac being the one who told him to come to the NFL when he did) and that a successful return to the NFL as a humble and contrite person can give this story a positive ending which would let it be more than "how to fuck up a perfect gig" and instead be proof that everyone in this country gets a second chance.

Despite all that, I read the indictment. I know that compared to other player's who have taken/endangered/been arguably complicit in the deaths of humans, what he did was relatively minor in the scale of "bad things" that people have done that still play in the NFL...but still, the sheer brutality of that entire affair was frightening. At the same time, to bar someone from the NFL forever for killing animals when people who kill humans have a chance to return...something seems awry with that too. I love animals, but if I had the chance to save a human or save an animal, there's not really a question that I save the human (unless the animal is Nimmy and the human has no boobs, of course).

I guess I'll reserve judgment on how smart/stupid this move is until after more information is available, but jeez...

Stoke

don't lie... you already ordered your jersey...

SilverTalon
08-14-2009, 05:43 AM
The only Eagles jerseys I have that I paid for is my collection of Donovan McNabb ones (green, white and black so's I can usually match up). I think I have a T.O. jersey that's too small floating around that I got for Christmas just before the Eagles went to the Super Bowl (i.e. - pre-meltdown), but that's about it.

The biggest question for me is why? It's not that I think Vick is wholly undeserving of his chance for redemption as I'm growing rather weary of our drift to "once a scumbag, always a scumbag" attitude in the US, but I just don't see where it makes football sense. As I remarked to Shadow last night, there has to be a plan there. They're not taking the PR hit and paying him that much money to have him ride the pine all year long. He's not going to be the starting QB, #5 is the man there. He's not going to play RB, because Vick was made of paper when he played and the NFC East hits like real men when you have the ball, not the sissy pillow-fights that the NFC South has during run plays...so that's out. He's far too small to be a tight-end and why would you have him be a receiver when you already have too many veterans?

Seems like a rather heavy price to pay for a Wildcat specialist, even if he is a better Wildcat-er than anyone else in the league.

Stoke

SilverTalon

The only part of that column that I disagree with is the part about McNabb being concerned. He and Vick are well-known friends going back to when neither of them was in the NFL. Vick stayed at Syracuse in McNabb's room back when Vick was being recruited and cited McNabb as one of the people who told him to leave VA Tech a year early for the NFL. Had they brought in Brett Farve, yes...McNabb would be miffed. Bringing in his friend that hit rough times and is looking for a chance for redemption...somehow I doubt that McNabb is putting on that brave public face for show. In fact, it could be that McNabb was one of the drivers of this deal...maybe we'll find out in the coming weeks.

Stoke
08-14-2009, 06:54 AM
But like anything, that article was just the writers opinion. Hell, yesterday, Foxsports all but had published a photoshopped pic of Vick in a Panthers uniform....they were dead sure thats where he was going....

For those who are curious, I picked up the game the other day and I'd call it a mixed bag in terms of quality. Some parts of it are really good, others leave a bit to be desired. Most of the bad parts seem to be in the menu system more than anything else. Why it takes five and six "simulate to this game" commands before it actually simulates to the game is beyond me. The Extra Point feature is "meh" overall and doesn't seem to add all that much. Also the guy who is not Chris Collinsworth really didn't do a good job on the commentary, down to poor execution on the voice acting where there's a huge pause between him saying the score at the quarter and then which team it is leading.

In terms of gameplay though, it's fairly good. The blockers are idiots sometimes, but that happens in the NFL to a slightly lesser degree. I don't buy that you couldn't run the same play 60 times in a row and fool the computer, because I have a few that always seem to work...not always to the same guy, but still. The ref deliberations are cool if you're new to Madden, but 9 times out of 10 you know what the result is going to be before they even cut to the animation if you're a vet of the series. The fumble dogpile mechanic is "eh"...an interesting twist, but I've not seen enough to really say if they captured it well or annoyingly. Interceptions off tips are insanely common, which mirrors the actual NFL much better where more INTs come off deflections than come off of straight "stupid throws" (unless you play against Carolina).

Of course, the rosters are already out of date with Plexiglass Burress appearing on the Chiefs rather than the pen and Ron Mexico being noticeably absent from the Eagles. Obviously, EA can't be blamed for things that JUST happened not being in the game they sent to manufacturing a month+ ago, but the roster updates will hopefully remedy this.

All in all it's a good game, but it's still that incremental step forward in one place and a couple back in others that characterizes Madden. I'll have to re-up to XBL and beat up Skillet a few times to see how the online play goes. :)

SilverTalon
08-15-2009, 09:14 PM
Skillet and I have played a few more rounds and he's getting progressive better at reacting to the three plays I run. :( The last one (Steelers vs. Iggles) boiled down to Rothelisberger getting CRUSHED and fumbling to end the half. I encourage Skillet to pick the Saints so that he can play Stoke twice.

We did find a random funny bug though...in the 4th quarter I threw a TD, the booth reviewed it and it said "Reveresed!" so the ball was at the one. o_O We are unsure wtf happened there, since Curtis was five yards deep in the endzone when he caught it. A play later Westbrook takes it in. The funny thing though was I got credit for TWO Curtis touchdowns at that point AND Westbrook's. Skillet said my redzone efficiency was 133%.

Yes, apparently I score on red zone opportunities I don't actually have.

I saw where the Iggles had you down 7-0 in the 2nd last nite... I didnt check back after that. I lost in overtime to the Cowpukes but spanked the Patriots and the Dolphins pretty hard yesterday.

There were a couple of questionable things that happened during the ass whipping I took from Silver though. He runs a fumble back almost the whole length of the field only to have the call reversed. Then I clearly was in the end zone but the refs decided that I never crossed the plane. Bastards.

SilverTalon
08-17-2009, 05:51 AM
The reversal was probably correct, because it seemed like he was down before the red fumble thing came up. The bug where I still got credit for the TD on the recap was amusing though...I wonder if that actual impacts the results tho since it's happened twice (tho in both games it was a matter of academics).

The real bitch of that "no TD" was that it was 4th down and I agree, you got robbed...it looked like he fell into the end zone well before anything hit the ground. Wouldn't have mattered of course, but you should have had a lower margin of defeat than Skillet had. :p

I don't know why I'm helping you all beat my ass (Skillet was literally one play from victory on his last attempt), but here's some things that have helped me be successful:

Long passes are a good way to lose normally. Keep your routes short and to the point. Only throw the long ball when you know you have a pattern that will work.
Mis-matches are very important for passing. Skillet got gutted because the Eagles are difficult to match up with across the board. Know which of your players is better at their job than their opponent. For the Eagles, this is the RBs and their third and fourth receivers. This is generally who I'm looking for on patterns. My #1 and #2 ranked receivers are much harder to throw the ball to since they have the best corners on them.
Even though you may have 4-5 receivers on a play, pick two...preferably on the same side of the field. Scope the one you think is most likely to be open, if he looks covered dump it off to the other. If both are covered, throw it away or scramble. As you get better, you might be able to include a third receiver. Looking across the field for receivers is a good way to take sacks. Just like the real NFL, you only have about 5-6 seconds to make your throw. It's there or it isn't.
Adjust at the line, it makes you brutal to play against. See a blitz coming? Hot route a receiver to a slant or a post and burn it big. Skillet finally figured out to play dime against you? Switch to a run and blast through the DBs.

I expect to sustain multiple losses now. :p

Also, here's how I *THINK* our little group is shaping up:

Silver - Los Eagles
Gryphon - Seachickens
Stoke - Panties
Dane - Vikings or Dolphins most likely (although picking an AFC team will make for a lonely and boring season methinks)
CB - Falcons
Skillet - ??? Saints?

So the NFC South looks to be hotly contested (read: people want to play Stoke twice)...the rest not-so-much :)

I find that if the name of the play contains the word SLANT, I have a higher completion percentage.

SilverTalon
08-17-2009, 06:28 AM
Until your opponent has a press blitz going. :) Disrupts the timing and puts too much pressure on the QB to be reliable. Slants are timing routes, so jamming the receivers can really disrupt it.

Problem is that it's a gamble like all blitzes. If they miss the jam they'll be horribly out of position and if the QB connects it's a 20+ yard gain. There's some zone coverages that are effective too, but you really have to commit to stopping the slant for it to work (Note: this is an excellent idea against the Eagles when I'm playing them. :p I run quick slants from 3-4 different formations and hot route them often because they are a PITA to defend against).

With the recent signing of Mr. Favre to the Vikes, do we want to hold off on creating a franchise for a week or so to let the rosters catch up? Gryphon is crushed by the mighty Rams 24-6.
Skillet wins 56-0 over the Lions, but the game is ruled invalid due to Russian Mafia interference. Replay is ongoing, but sounds more like a much closer match-up.
Stoke drove down the field on his opening drive to lead 7-0, and this marked the end of his participation in the scoring summary. The Iggles posted 45 unanswered points. The highlights were the "DEATH TO THE UPRIGHTS" field goal attempt by the Panthers from the 3 yard line and the 104 yard Pick 6 by the Eagles. :)

Week 2's match-up of Skillet vs. Silver was quite the shoot-out. Both teams marching up and down the field at will, the Eagles went into the half leading 31-28. Skillet took the lead 35-31 but the Iggles managed to match it prompting a 38-35 score going into the fourth. Philadelphia went up 45-35 on the back of Westbrook, but Skillet immediately returned the kickoff to cut the margin back to three. The Eagles managed a field goal to put the score at 48-42, and the stage was set for Skillet's great upset victory...

...until Shockey fumbled a long pass reception and Sheldon Brown (also known as the Stoke-killer) ran the fumble all the way back. The Saints put it into the endzone one more time, but were unable to recover the onside kick. The Iggles cheered as they escaped with a 54-49 win.

Odd factoid of the season: The Eagles have had 100+ yard interception returns in consecutive weeks.

That'd be cool as well. I'll be advancing the franchise whenever I notice all the human games have been played, so that'll proceed at a variable rate. Starting next Friday I'll advance it regardless of outstanding games if we haven't previous in the week (to keep one game from holding up all of us). :p

How about we play each other twice (swapping stadiums) and that determines the seeding for a tournament? :D

Seed 1 plays Seed 6 -> "Championship"
Seed 2 plays Seed 5, Seed 3 plays Seed 4 -> Winners play each other -> "Championship"

Seems simple enough.

After a CPU-based Week 3, we're now onto Week 4. Grunt has taken over control of the Cows, we're anxiously awaiting CB as the Falcons are looking for a new coach after starting 0-3. Skillet posted some strong numbers to be king of offense this week with a 56-24 victory over the Bills. Sadly, the Chiefs decided that they really wanted the Eagles to take that honor as they closed the game out 87-31 with the NFL records for receiving, passing and TD passes being obliterated.

Up ahead for Week 4:
Daneford (3-0) hosts the Pack in what will be a charged game in the real world.
Skillet (2-1) plays host to the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!
Gryph (0-3) travels to Indianapolis to hopefully keep the score below 500.
Grunt makes the trip north to play the Broncos in his first action since taking over the floundering franchise that is 1-1-1.
Stoke and Silver have the bye and will be vacationing in Maui with their respective team's cheerleaders.

CB and I tried a couple Co-Op games last night. While certainly amusing for a little bit, the format itself is absolutely terrible. The defense is run from the opposite perspective of normal (i.e. - defense on bottom...good luck playing coverage) and the offense cameras are so bad as to be wholly ineffective. For the guest the camera doesn't really follow you so about the time you get 6 yards downfield as a receiver it becomes near impossible to see what the coverage is doing or where you need to be in relation to the catch circle. The QB camera is mildly less annoying, but not by much.

Can't say I'd recommend that mode other than to try it once to see how bad it truly is...but whoever thought that implementation was satisfactory should be fired.

Here is a good example of why you should never showboat too early - intentional or not. This happened in mine and CB's defensive struggle....

After the slow Southerners got their asses in gear, the week was advanced last night.

The Carolina - Atlanta matchup was one of epic porportions as I'm sure CB will attest. It was a defensive struggle with both offenses and QBS especially having a difficult go of things. There were probably a combined 10 or so turnovers (most in the red zone) and some overall weird things happened.

Examples of the mediocrity of both offenses (if I recall correctly):

The Kittys stopped the birds on 4th and goal at the 2. The kittys took over and promptly fumbled at about the 5 or so giving it right back to the birds setting up the birds lone TD.

The lone TD by the Kittys was an interception return.

There were lots of "its jsut like a long punt" in this game.... and several instances of the gatorade being spiked.....

Overall, this game was probably the most fun I've had yet playing Madden..... wish there could have been an audience.... it was classic.

I was commenting to CB that it seemed less a defensive struggle and more a struggle of who's offense was more inept. :)

The Eagles of late have really been struggling on defense (much like their RL counterparts). Seems like every game there's a series of duelling 60+ yard TDs by each team and situations where 4 guys tackle a running back from all points of the compass and he breaks free for a touchdown.

Of course, I'm not playing cupcakes like the Falcons and Panthers anymore either... :)

I recall the Panthers beating the Iggles in one online matchup...... anything CAN happen.....

As a friendly reminder...tomorrow sometime around 9PM Eastern the week in Madden will be advanced. The Seahawks and Panthers owners may wish to play their games prior to this time, or just take whatever fate gives them. :)

Apparently CB learned to play offense or my defense truly is that inept as the Eagles and Falcons had quite a shoot-out last night. CB had 529 yards of offense, returned a McNabb fumble for a touchdown and held the ball for over 31 of the 40 minutes in the game....and still lost by 7. Final score of 62-55.

The format of the game was CB would go on a 6-8 play march down the field, score a touchdown. Philadelphia would (usually) get the ball back and score 2 plays later. It all came down to Matt Ryan flopping like a fish on a 4th down QB sneak and coming up a half foot shy of the marker.

Other notable moments include CB's drunken receivers tottering down the field (and out of bounds in some occasions), a challenge that actually reversed a call (not that it mattered since CB scored the next play), and numerous "OH JESUS!" pass plays on both sides.

Also, there was this...

SilverTalon
10-09-2009, 10:32 AM
Yes, the game-time temperature was 382 degrees. Forgot about that.

Which explains why in the 4th quarter my offense was fatigued despite NOT BEING ON THE DAMNED FIELD BUT FOR SIX MINUTES.

Pansies...

And I thought my game with the Bucs was strange the other nite....

SilverTalon
10-15-2009, 07:15 AM
Once again displaying their complete ineptitude, my defense managed to at least pad the margin of victory against the Giants in their 82-42 victory. There were some wicked, wicked winds at the stadium blowing most kicks way off course.

The amusing part to me was Desean Jackson running back not one, but two missed field goals for touchdowns on back-to-back drives. Oddly enough, those are credited as fumble returns...though I'm not sure how the NFL would really track that it seems a bit inaccurate.

It's time to get down and dirty, firming up those playoff seedings. And of course you have the Eagles/Cowboys rematch which should end up determining the NFC East title.....

Stoke
10-26-2009, 12:29 PM
How 'bout that powerhouse NFC West division? Gryph is making a late season charge and might pull out the Division Championship.

Now, if I could only find Dane so we can get this weeks game out of the way....

SilverTalon
10-26-2009, 01:25 PM
You have to get through Skillet first Grunt. :)

And I am saddened to say that because of Grunt's looming rematch for (likely) the title, I had to beat the 49ers, aiding Gryph's bid for the title tremendously. :(

I think his secret is he has Stang play for him now...she's better at video games than him I hear...

im sure its a time zone thing as well.... i'm probably already off before Skillby gets home from work, etc and is on.
