http://www.blogcdn.com/www.wow.com/media/2009/08/az_stormragenovel.jpgSo the convention is over, Blizzard (http://wow.com/blizzcon-2009) has shown all (or at least most -- there are still secrets, we're sure) of their cards, and the next expansion will involve the return of Deathwing and a completely remade Azeroth (http://www.wow.com/2009/08/21/world-of-warcraft-cataclysm-announced/). Goblins will be in there as the Horde race, but as for the original speculation of the Maelstrom (http://www.wow.com/2009/06/10/the-maelstrom-lore-behind-the-possible-next-wow-expansion/) and the Emerald Dream (http://www.wow.com/2008/10/14/beyond-the-lich-looking-forward-to-future-patches/), well... It remains to be seen exactly how those will tie in to what we heard about at BlizzCon.

The biggest hint I saw at the Emerald Dream in the last year was the fact that Blizzard is going to release a "Stormrage" novel (http://www.wow.com/2009/08/12/stormrage-novel-cover-art-revealed/) -- that would hint that good old Malfurion Stormrage (http://www.wowwiki.com/Malfurion_Stormrage) and his kin would be spotlighted in the near future. Richard Knaak says the novel (http://www.wegame.com/watch/Blizzcon_2009_Richard_A_Knaak_on_World_of_Warcraft_Stormrage/) is set in the present, so something is going on for sure. Even though Deathwing is going to be the big bad this time around, something's still cooking with Stormrage.

Which actually makes sense. If we're going to get looks at Deepholm (the elemental plane of Earth, where Deathwing has been lying dormant (http://www.wow.com/2009/08/23/know-your-lore-world-of-warcraft-cataclysm-deathwing/) recently) and The Firelands (http://www.wowwiki.com/Firelands), as well as Skywall and the Abyssal Maw (the Fire, Air, and Water planes, respectively), that could mean they're going to open up Azeroth's other planes as well, with the Emerald Dream among them. The return of Deathwing would undoubtedly bring the other Aspects to bear, and Ysera would definitely be among those. In the opening ceremony last weekend (http://www.wow.com/2009/08/21/blizzcon-2009-opening-ceremony-live-blog/), Metzen dismissed the Emerald Dream as "rumors and speculation," but the upcoming Stormrage novel still hints we still might see the Emerald Dream sometime soon.Filed under: Analysis / Opinion (http://www.wow.com/category/analysis-opinion/), Odds and ends (http://www.wow.com/category/odds-and-ends/), Blizzard (http://www.wow.com/category/blizzard/), BlizzCon (http://www.wow.com/category/blizzcon/), Cataclysm (http://www.wow.com/category/cataclysm/)
