View Full Version : What position/role for you?

I'm not sure how secure we are here, so I didn't want to blather on too much about tactics in a game I haven't played yet. But I'm curious if we might begin to get a feel for how many we have of each role. My best position in T2 was capper, but I'm not too keen right now on the Inf suit and hacking.

I was always a fan of the tank in T2, but most people never want to use it. I think that's because it was fairly easy to kill and in most circumstances, there were better ways to achieve the same objective. But I think the V tank may be pretty nice. The driver fires the main gun so a gunner is a luxury. I like the idea of MAX, engineer/repair and snipers too. One thing I'm probably out on is piloting. It's fun, but I don't hang well with good pilots.

So, here's my plan to fill out four slots:

Tanker (prolly with heavy weaps and repair, med if I can fit it)
MAX (character devoted to MAX armor, all 3 if possible)
Engineer (turrets, repair, med, assualt if possible)
Sniper (maybe with inf and hacking too)

What are YOUR plans??

probably the following characters:

1) agile exo-suit
2) pilot/driver
3) MAX
4) engineer or medic

if i do any squad commanding, i'm not sure which one i'd like to focus it on though, cuz i can see the benefit of having any one of them doing the commanding. i guess it doesn't really matter.

Main Role- Probably heavy tanker
Secondary Role- Pilot for Mosquito, Reaver
Other Role- Standard Infantry, maybe MAX
Other Role- Infiltration

Avernger...I wonder what a group of say 3-4 tanks could do. That's 3-4 tank centric drivers, but the gunners could be stealthers, snipers or some form of infantry (AV, AI). I'd be really interested to see how a group of tanks could work together to cover each other and wipe out other tanks and max's, and of course infantry.

Yeah, It'd be great to get all the tribe's tank divisions together. From what I can tell though, really no one in TKB besides me wants to work with tanks. Honestly I'm just doing it because no one else really mentioned it. That, and I've always been pretty damn good at using the tank in T2 ;)

I'll be primarily a Pilot/Driver with some light armor/weapons certs. I prefer to be above the battle, or in the thick of battle with a vehicle, that be there without one.

Galaxies are going to be my big thing. Behind the scenes, letting the other guys fight it out.

Sniper/ Recon..

But now that you mention it.. I wouldn't mind being a tank gunner/sniper.. It would be especially cool if a tank division was lined up bombing a base and I could get out with my rifle and pick off infantry..:D

AvengerX

Yeah, it'd be pretty cool. Once you move the tanks into position, you could just sit and spam from that position, unload a bunch of snipers, then those troops that try to rush your tank position would get a bullet in the head for their trouble :)

AvengerX...sorry bout the misspell earlier...I know it's a bit early, but you can count on me to tank with ya...maybe we can get one or two more to join us on that ;)

Primary - command of forces, strategic command of entire battle situations, both air and ground based.

Primary certs - I'm leaning towards infantry type certs, MAX armor, regen implants and shield and hearing type. I want be both offensive strike and turn defensive to hold an objective for the 15 minutes.

I was thinking for secondary I'd have minimal certs to drive a vehicle or fly a small aircraft to support smaller 5man squads.

Basically I wanna be tossed right into the shit. I have an itchy trigger finger that wants to lay waste to TR and NC.

Since I'm very much into vehicles I'm thinking like this:

Primary role: THZ transport pilot/driver coupled with heavily armored medic/engineer, getting these certs in about this order: Galaxy, Agile armor, Reinforced armor, Medic 1+2, Engineering, some weapons, AMS, perhaps Deliverer + Sunderer, other vehicles.

Secondary role: Tanker with Medic/Engineer/Hacking abilities.

Tertiary roles: Defender: MAXs (all types) and Reinforced armor with Medic & Engineering certs.

Recopn/Sniper: Agile armor, Sniper and Mosquito certs along with other small vehicles.

Something in this fashion, perhaps.

I really like it on bottom, because then I don't have to do as much of the work.

Anyone know whether there are limitations on armor types versus vehicle piloting like in tribes?

Walks on Clouds
03-19-2003, 10:18 PM
Most likely, yes. Since it states in the description of the Agile armor type something like: "bla bla bla... A fighter wearing Agile armor may also pilot all vehicles. bla bla bla.." SO, yes, is the answer to your question, I'm fairly certain.

Spinning Hat

It'd be hard to imagine a MAX armor type piloting a tiny Mosquito Fighter... But now, if you were piloting an AMS, you could then switch to MAX, and assault the NME.

From what info I've gathered so far, this is what I'm probably leaning towards:

Primary: Combat Engineer, with focus on supply/repair of frontline forces. Also tacking on anti-tank capabilities and munitions laying (remotes and mines) for base and convoy defence, but will leave frontline fighting to the infantry. Will probably add on hacking once I get enough cert points.

Seconday: Sniper/Medic with a fast vehicle (Haraser).

No idea for tertiary roles, but MAX armor looks tempting.

Hey Arkmon, your Combat Engineer role is basically a Medic with really cool remote toys. ;)

And has anyone noticed how lots of people want to be sniper/medics? Isn't that a kind of selfish oxymoron? Snipers hide in trees and bushes and shoot single targets a long way away, rarely coming into contact with the NME if they're a good sniper. Medics by nature are in the thick of the fighting relatively unarmed, trying to heal and revive friendly units, and are in almost constant contact with the NME.

But what I hope, is that combatants have the respect for the medics like during WWII. The Germans knew and understood the unwritten rule that you didn't intentionally shoot the Medics, as they were relatively unarmed and therefore not a real threat to you.

That kind of thinking would not make the Medics invulnerable, they would still need to be mindful of where they stand, but they could at least have a decent chance of surviving an engagement and revive more than one soldier before he dies.

I'm surprised more haven't chosen hacking/inf as a primary role. Those skills are going to be necessary, as are MAX's to break down base defenses. I'm glad to hear we have people planning on supportive roles though, like the medics, engineers and repairers. :)

Spinning,

I don't think we'll see that level of chivalry in PS :( , especially considering medics will likely have enough certs to wear the medium armor and carry some nasty weapons.

I know it. :( It's a bastard that way I guess. But, if that happens to be the case, the Medic will be my first target.

In DAoC the unwritten rule was kill the medics first

if you find a healer slaughter his ass... meanwhile protect yours

the way a typical fight worked was both sides rushed... healers resurected the dead ASAP.

the team who was able to res the fastest usually won. if the other side broke thier your wall on figthers and hit your healers... you ran like hell. sometimes you got away sometimes you didn't... there was always lots of bodies everywhere.

I'm kind of in love with everything right now . . . but I know I need a Vanu MAX character, because of the jetting.

1. Vanu MAX (w00t jumpjets).
2. Reenforced armor with vehicle cert for the little 4-wheeler. MUST-HAVE, if I have an ordinary infantry character he needs mobility.
3. Agile exo for light operations and piloting Mosquito + Reaver.
4. Dunno.

But I want to get at least those first 3 maxxed out on one server, so I can jump roles QUICKLY and never be at a loss for combat capability.

Actually, from what I've heard and read, bases need refuelling and need resupply or else they go offline. I plan to do this unglorious job (with some help to those who join me). There is also the repair of vehicles and body armor needed. Since it seems it takes forever to get anywhere, even in fast vehicles, the last thing I think everyone wants is to wait for vehicle reinforcments, when a quick patch up job could have been done in a jiffy.

I'll probably add a basic medic cert sometime, but I'll leave the uber-healing to the medics. They need the work anyhow :)

Yeah I will be doing support roles as well, I know in DAoC support positions where what really mattered. Everyone always whats to be a sniper or a big run users, these positions don't really win wars but people seem to like them

Yo Arkmon,

Pics from the beta show peeps using the galaxy to drop off the ANT into the warpgate, the either pick it back up and fly to base or just drive back.

I think that is the primary target for most base capture I bet. Kill the ANT, let it run out of power, then go in a take over base.

So you might want to check on getting galaxy support.

There's enough pilots right now that Galaxy Support shouldn't be a problem.

Ark, I definitely think you gotta get a sniper rifle cert, I remember you being bad-ass with the laser rifle in T2.

I do like the idea that PS is going to be dependent upon pilots and vehicles for massive movements of troops... This is gonna be so cool.

I haven't decided yet what I want for sure. Here are the definates:

1: Reaver specialist
2: infiltration hacker/scout
3: AA MAX

Arkmon

Smack: Yeah, I know that I'll be riding a galaxy a lot in the game when I do ANT runs, but it'll depend on the situation. I think at times, those Galaxies can probably be huge bullet magnets, so sometime a ground run with maybe a Haraser or Mesquito escort will do at times at well. Hope to find out soon though.

Splidz: No worries, I fully plan to get a sniper cert for both my engineer and pure sniper characters.
