Re: Borderlands

Picked it up off Steam, because Steam is just so easy and convenient! *waits for check from Valve*

My four hour impressions of the game:

The Good
  • Diablo with guns
  • Lots of guns
  • The hand-drawn textures give it a very unique apperance
  • Lots of lots of guns
  • The looting is fairly intelligent, giving you the things you "need" the most. If you use SMGs, you'll see more SMG bullets. Opt for sniper rifles, you find a lot of that ammunition dropping.
  • If giggling while your enemies are set on fire and immolate into nothing is wrong, I don't want to be right.
  • Co-op mayhem as fun as advertised.
  • "Second Wind" system is kind of nice for those "OMGWTF" monster rushes. Basically if your health gets knocked down, you get a few seconds to kill an enemy. Do so and you hop up with a bit of health left.
  • While there's RPG-like aspects to the damage dealing, hitting important things produces much better damage than shooting knees.
  • Metric fuckton of guns

The Bad
  • Peer-to-peer multiplayer is spotty on getting connections even when you do the port forwarding they say to do. (ARE YOU LISTENING INFINITY WARD?)
  • Only one mission can be actively tracked at a time. If you have multiple objectives in the same area, you could easily run right past them because you're not tracking that mission.
  • A lot of stats on weapons, and hard to tell which is better for what. Fortunately in the early goings, you can just pick the ones that set people on fire and be pretty effective.
  • Muiltiplayer loot is "whoever grabs it, gets it"

The Indifferent
-Voice chat is built-in, but very Xbox Live-ish where it's just talk and it goes. Obviously, it's like that because of Xbox Live and it's not horrible, but it can be jarring for those used to Push-to-Talk...especially if you don't want your teammates hearing you tell your wife that you'll be to dinner in a few minutes.
