Troubleshooting suggestions

For a little while Stang had to restart the computer 4 or 5 times before it would start up, it would just stay blank with no POST. Now it will not POST and just stays blank no matter what we do.

I took out all the non-essentials with no luck, I then disassembled the whole thing and then put it back together again without luck still. I purchased a PSU tester, and it indicates that the power supply is OK. I am down to thinking that it is the motherboard or CPU.

I am wondering which is more likely the culprit, and if there are any tests I could do to try and figure out which one.

Re: Troubleshooting suggestions

Does the power come on? Does the PC speaker beep? How many times? It sounds to me like a mainboard issue, because even with no CPU in the board, the video still should come one and POST would display a CPU error. (I think.. Been a long time since I've had to troubleshoot it.) But the PC speaker beeping would be a good indicator, if it does beep at all. You have another CPU around the house you can drop in it?

A LED on the mainboard lights up, all fans and drives spin, the screen just stays blank, no beeps.

I don't think I have a spare CPU, i'll have to double check what is in another computer.

Re: Troubleshooting suggestions

Ya, that's probably a mainboard problem.. If you had a bad CPU, the mobo would beep at you for a bit before it showed the POST error. Looks like it's time for an upgrade!

Re: Troubleshooting suggestions

I agree, its rare that a CPU goes bad, altho it does happen from time to time. Try taking the motherboard out and laying it on some cardboard. Hook it up and see if it'll boot. I've had some cases, without any visible problems, just not boot a motherboard before. Could be a short or something between board and case.
