Its a sad day.....

www.alliedtribalforces.com made the "Blocked Sites" list today at work....along with half of the known existing internet.....

Now we get nothing related to
A) Entertainment (primarily youtube and streaming audio sites)
B) Sports (aaargghhh! no more ESPN)
C) Fashion/Home-garden (wtf...who cares)
D) Intimate Apparel/swimwear (legal porn as we call it)
E) Games or gaming (oh noes they be stealin' my friends!)
F) Weapons (apparently we got a lot of folks sitting around looking at gun sites)

hell, there just went about 5 hours of my workday.......

Wow, they must have noticed you going there a lot and took a look. Most basic workplace proxies only do keyword blocking on URLs and don't actually search the site content. That sucks

We have an entire 15 person department that spend their whole days "watching" what everyone does online. They have extensive filters that look for everything. They can do generic things like you say or they can- and will - block whole domains.

We now have over 22,000 pissed off employees who cant surf anymore....

Re: Its a sad day.....

While the obvious retort from the company would be "Why don't you do some work around here?" I do find that incredibly short-sighted. There's quite a few articles out which point out that a small amount of web surfing (10-15 minutes every couple of hours) is quite beneficial to both morale and productivity, not unlike the "cigarette break" of yesteryear (that's still allowed at many companies to this day).

If I were in charge of IT and worked for a company too paranoid to manage their employees properly, I'd try to find a system whereby an employee could "log on" to the general web (not porn or anything, but shopping or what have you) for 15-30 minutes a day so that people could "recharge" during the day.

Of course, if I was king of the company I'd just state that anyone who's performance wasn't up to par better not be spending all day surfing the web or they'll be on the curb sitting next to a box of their stuff...but ya know, the whole "management has a job to do too" angle never seems to go real far. If you can't trust an employee to do work, why are they an employee?

Re: Its a sad day.....

the main problem seems to be summed up in two words....

Streaming Audio....

But they chose just to block everything.....

Re: Its a sad day.....

ATF gets blocked at my work occasionally too, but thus far I've been lucky and able to get in simply by refreshing the page. Fancy high-tech filters we have there, clearly...
