This is the first part of a scheduled dev chat for Dark and Light.

Q: You said we wouldn't be able to build our houses at the exact location we wanted. But will we have some kind of organization in order to avoid excess like in SWG?
A: Construction zone will be defined beforehand, near the cities. Density is controlled by terrain size. The type of terrain can influence the type of construction.

Q: Will we have items (either looted or crafted) that will have no function but to give more depth to the game? Flower pots, paintings for our houses, etc.
A: Yes, you will have furniture, paintings, plants for your terrain, trees, ornaments.

Q: Will the partnership with SNAILGAME bring graphic enhancements? Showing screenshots Before/After would be the most simple and the most obvious.
A: SNAILGAME is working on new 3D elements, not on the enhancement of already-existing elements. We will show you the results of this partnership.

Q: Will members from AD have their own characters (as game masters and players, alternatively)?
A: Our game masters will have some tools available, one of them being specific characters they can use.

Q: How frequently will patches be released? (Not including hotfixes)
A1: During the launch period, patches will be released several times a week, then on a regular basis.
A2: Frequency hasn't been defined yet.

Q: Do you still plan locations in Ganareth offering adult content? Can we get some more information about it? (are they like forbidden cities?)
A: There will be no adult content. This suggestion had been made on the forums, but for now we do not plan to develop this.

Q: Will there be buildings with a kind of fighting ring or arena, and a bar?
A: There will be small arenas. The idea of adding a bar to them is pretty good.

Q: Will there be platforms in villages, that preachers, politics, artists and other actors can use?
A: Every village will have its own main place.

Q: We already know that GMs will organize events. We know that many players are looking forward to these features: do you plan to stage many small eevents, or few events related to an ongling storyline?
A: Many events, as well as many intrigues that will spread over a long timeline.

Q: Will players be able to own a tavern, or to replace a NPC that already owns one?
A: this feature will not be available

Q: Will we be able to attack transportation dragons?
A: No, transportations are considered safe places.

Q: Will we have in-game money games?
A: We will add simple games, so why not adding money games as well.

Q: Will we have a collector version of the game, in addition to the standard version?
A: Collector versions will be available in 2006, not for the November 2005 release.

Q: What are the different payment options available? Will there be pre-paid cards as in World of Warcraft, in order to allow easier access to younger players?
A1: There will be no pre-paid cards upon release, the only payment method will be online credit card. We are working together with a company that is specialized in online billings for transaction security. However, the Dark and Light November offer will offer options close to pre-paid cards.
A2: The November 2005 release will be 100% online. The game will be available for download on www.darkandlight.com.

Q: We know that the action will be in the open, for the major part. But will there also be something to do inside buildings, besides taking fortresses?
A: Very few things will occur inside buildings. We will however implement very spacious buildings.

Q: Either upon release or thanks to a patch, will we be able to play a farmer? How can farms be tended, and what will be their range of action?
A: Yes, in a future patch, economic skills will allow you to own and manage a farm. But in November, when Dark and Light is released, the in-game timeline will not allow such economic skills.

Q: With the future undersea and underground implementation, will we have new races (such as mermaids)?
A: The undersea will offer new cities, and an appropriate bestiary.

Q: Will flying mobs attack us? For instance, I'm flying in the air and suddenly get attacked by a flying monster.
A: Yes, flying NPCs will behave the same way as the others, combat-wise.

Q: Will we be able to see information related to other players, such as level, profession, etc? Will we be able to hide these elements?
A1: Basic information will always be visible.
A2: We will be able to show or hide specific information.

Q: Can we change our name and appearance?
A: Appearance, yes. Name, no.

Q: Will there be a limit of houses a player can own ?
A: Yes, characters will have a basic house, and will be able to enhance it according to his/her own evolution.

Q: You stick to a release in November 2005. At this date, do you think the game will be finished, or is it because you cannot afford another delay and want to release the game, even if it is not finished?
A1: The game will be released in November because our first objective will be fulfilled in November: a first version of Dark and Light that will allow the most faithful members of our community to be part of the legend of Ganareth, and to add their name to the background.
A2: We always said that the final goal of DnL was to allow players to put a hand on the game, to have complete freedom, and to be part of the construction of Ganareth. This is what we will offer to you in November 2005.

Q: Will in-game information be available outside the game? Will information transfer be managed automatically, allowing players to monitor the action from the outside, for instance :
- military info (fortress capture, alliances, ...)
- political info (tax rates, ...)
- current weather (weather forecast?)
A: Yes, at first you will be able to see territory conquests on a website.

Q: Will we eventually have a Mac/Lunix version, or will you stick to Windows only?
A: No client for Mac or Linux for now.

Q: Will we be able to set a destination for our pet (a destination that is not a target to attack, but something we could use to create a diversion when attacking a fortress).
A: Pets will have 9 different attitudes, for instance: defend their master, attack a target, defend a position, etc. And even go for a walk!


Q: Do archers, rogues and thieves really have the possibility to kill nobles inside their fortress?
A: Yes, when a fort is under attack. You can do so even when the fortress isn't attacked, but this will have no consequence on fortress ownership.

Q: If a noble is assassinated when outside his/her fortress, does he/she loses his/her domain?
A: These actions have no consequence on fortress ownership.

Q: What systems did you implement in order to avoid people making PvE combat too easy (for instance, by bringing 15 people when you only need 2, or 200 people when the challenge is tailored for 2 groups of experienced fighters)?
A: The principle of group level and god wrath, when fighting against easy foes, will restrict this kind of behaviour.

Q: Will default settings include character name display and running enabled?
A: Yes, these will be the default settings.

Q: Generally speaking, what are the systems used in DnL to maintain challenge in PvE, and to allow people to level without using only "hunting", i.e. good old monster bashing that almost nobody can tolerate anymore?
A1: Quests and multiple events will punctuate your journey on Ganareth.
A2: In addition, even if this isn't directly related to character levelling, your progression in the political and religious hierarchy of Ganareth will be one of the many activities available in the game.

Q: Can we use several name for one single avatar?
A: No, not for the time being.

Q: How do you intend to manage massive player arrival in their birthplace at launch?
A: As soon as people arrive in one of the many birthplaces available, they will be offered exploration quests in order to drive them away from these villages and to show them the world of Ganareth.

Q: On a classic server, launch time can create overpopulation issues. What about DnL?
A: Overpopulation isn't a problem for the server technology we use, except in cases of massive gatherings in one place. Our GMs will have tools at their disposal to monitor these places, and to offer solutions. In the worst cases, people will naturally migrate to less populated places.

Q: Will there be "easy" quests for beginners, that still offer good rewards?
A: Yes, there will be several quest types. Some of them, such as exploration quests, will not require fighting.

Q: Regarding PvP and fortress capture, will a lord and his soldiers have to stay awake day and night, or did you implement something in order to make fortress capture harder after midnight? (given the fact that the server is international, which makes things even more complicated).
A1: In fact, fortress capture is possible according to a recurring time frame. During this time frame, the fortress is "unlocked". The lord can change this time frame. The larger the fortress, the longer the time frame. This time frame cannot be split in several parts.
A2: For instance, of the fortress has to be opened for 12 hours, it cannot be opened for 6 times 6 hours.
Unlock time frames will be public, everybody will know about them and will be able to organize.

Q: After a fortress attack, is there a waiting time before the fortress can be attacked again?
A: Yes, this delay will allow the new lord to seize control of his/her property.

Q: Can we live in a cave, or do we have to live in a house ?
A: For now, you will have to live in a house. Some houses are made of earth, but there is no cave for now.

Q: Is it possible to create neutral guilds?
A: There are no neutral guilds. 3 choices are available: Dark, Light or Wanted. Guild affiliation to a divinity such as Neutra is not linked to guild membership. A guild leader may however choose to accept only followers of Neutra.

Q: Can we climb up walls? If yes, will this ability be restricted to some classes only?
A: Yes, you can even climb up ladders. Thieves will climb with greater ease.

Q: Will add-ons be free or not?
A: This is still being discussed.
