Death Knight faq

Quote:
How do you create a Death knight?

Currently, no quest line is required to create a death knight. Once you have bought and installed Wrath of the Lich King, all you need is one character on your -entire account- that is level 55 or higher. Once you have a character of that level, the Death knight class will be 'unlocked', and you will be able to create new characters using that class.

According to current information, players are allowed to have as many death knights per account as they desire, but they are restricted to -one per server/realm-. You can have one death knight on every server if you want, but no more than one on each server.

If you wish to create a death knight on a pvp or rp-pvp server, you cannot create the character on the opposite faction of what you currently play. For example, if you have alliance characters on a pvp or rp-pvp server, you cannot create a horde death knight on that same server.

Where do Death knights start?

Death knights start at level 55, in a floating necropolis over the eastern plaguelands. This necropolis is likely to be 'nuetral' ground, so no pvp can take place there. Within the necropolis, new deathknights follow a series of quests that teach them how to use each of the abilities the character starts with, as well as introduce them to the lore surrounding the character and class.

Death knights start with nearly full gear. They do not have trinkets, a tabard, a shirt, or a ranged weapon item. The deathknight's armor is all green, including rings, while the weapon they begin with - a two handed sword - is of blue quality.

What races can be Death knights?

At this point in time, blizzard is allowing -all- races to play as deathknights, under the pretense that no matter what race a person follows, it's just as likely to be corrupted by the lich king's power and promises as anyone else.

Will Death knights be Overpowered?

Though they are listed as a 'hero' class, death knights will be appropriately balanced against all other classes. They will be effective against certain classes in pvp, but blizzard will not make them 'super-characters'.

What armor types can Death knights use?

Currently, Death knights can wear all armor types, and focus specifically on plate armor.

What weapons can Death knights use?

Currently, Death knights can use:
1-handed swords
2-handed swords
1-handed axes
2-handed axes
1-handed maces
2-handed maces

They can also dual-wield. It is very likely that dual-wielding will be the best choice for raid/pve damage output, while using two-handed weapons will be more effective in pvp.

It should be noted that deathknights cannot use shields or ranged weapons. The ranged weapon slot will probably be used for 'rune' items, similar to the totems/idols/librams used by the other hybrid classes.

How will death knights tank without a shield?

Death knights have several abilities which increase armor, reduce damage taken, or reduce the damage that the target deals. For example, "frost presence" - which acts like a self-only aura - increases armor by 45%.

General consensus is that blizzard plans on removing or reducing the effects of crushing blows in Wrath of the Lich King, to make tanking easier for feral druids and death knights alike. Death knights will probably not be required to stack extreme amounts of parry and dodge rating in order to achieve uncrushability.

What are the Death knight talent trees?

The three death knight talent trees are:
1. Blood - Damage-dealing / self healing tree
2. Frost - Tanking / spell damage tree
3. Unholy - Utility / Summoning tree

How does the Death knight Combat System work?

Death knights have two resources to manage: runes, and runic power.

Next to your character portrait (the top left corner of your screen, by default) is an iconic rune blade with six rune slots on it.

While out of combat, the player can click on these runes individually to change their type. There are three types of runes: Blood, Frost, and Unholy - there may also be additional rune types available from talents.

Each primary ability used by deathknights requires a specific number and type of runes. For example, Plague Strike - which deals weapon damage and applies a disease (DoT effect) to the target - requires one unholy rune.

As of current knowledge, runes have a 10 second cooldown after they are used. Some abilities require the use of multiple runes, including differing types of runes.

When a Rune-based ability (such as plague strike) is used, it generates a second resource known as Runic Power. Runic power, like rage, decays over time while out of combat, and currently builds up to 100 maximum runic power.

Special 'finishing moves' available to death knights drain all runic power and use it to increase the effect of these moves. For example, Death Coil does damage to enemy living targets, or heals friendly living targets, for X points of damage/health per point of runic power.

The system is best compared to the combo attacks and finishing moves that rogues use. Rune abilities are used to generate runic power, and then finishing moves are used which drain all available runic power to deal damage or increase duration.

Does the Death knight have a mount?

Yes, the death knight begins with the ability to summon an undead horse for a mount. This mount travels at 60% increased speed like all other level 40 mounts.

At level 60, Death knights can complete a quest to obtain a +100% travel speed epic Deathcharger mount, like those of the warlock and paladin.

These mounts both have unique models, but look very similar to the skeletal horse mounts used by undead players.

What is the Death knight's Role in PvE?

Death knights are a tank/DPS hybrid. While they have a 'tanking' tree (frost) and many abilities in other trees to improve damage mitigation, they will likely not be as effective at raid tanking most bosses as other current tanking classes are.

Rather, Death knights are designed to tank spellcasters. They have many abilities which reduce magic damage taken by both themselves and party/raid members, making them extremely useful when fighting bosses or mobs that deal magic damage.

Death knights will also perform effectively in a raid DPS role. Their personal damage output may not be as high as that of rogues or fury warriors, but they offer both their own damage as well as many useful buffs to the raid to increase the damage or survivability of others.

Such abilities include:
-Raise dead - can bring a dead raid member back to 'life' as a ghoul with unique damage-dealing abilities for up to 3 1/2 minutes.
-Hysteria (blood talent) - increases the damage of a friendly party/raid member by 20% for 30 seconds, but the target suffers a 1% health loss every second for the duration.
-Anti-Magic Field (unholy talent) - greatly reduces spell damage taken by all party/raid members within the area of the field.

What classes will the Death knight be effective against in pvp?

While nothing relating to the Death knight's pvp effectiveness is known at this time, it is speculated that deathknights will be extremely effective against healing classes and spellcasters.

What classes will be a threat to Death knights in pvp?

Again, no specifics are known, but speculation says that melee classes will be the toughest opponents for death knights.

What will be the fastest leveling 'spec' for Death knights?

Most players are betting on the blood tree for the fastest leveling, as it contains the most personal damage boosts and very melee-oriented talents.

However, it is also possible that Unholy will prove an effective leveling tree, though it will focus on a different playstyle - that of summoning minions and using diseases/DoTs rather than improving melee damage output.

Will Death knights have unique skins/appearances?

Currently, no unique skins are being used in testing. This could change, however.

What color will death knights be in the raid/search windows?

Currently, death knights have a dark red name color in the user interface.
