The simulations that people have put together for warlocks in 3.1 show several specs that have similar DPS output at high gear levels, including affliction. So you should be able to stay affliction if you want.

Yeah...... The kids are old enough that they don't need bottles anymore, so my extended AFK days are over. But really, I think we can agree that that was just poor instance design on Blizzard's part.
