I got a cat
His name is Murray
Born June 4, 2009 at the Austin Humane Society, this handsome, funny, and intuitive kitty enjoys climbing up my legs, waking me up at 4:30 am, and licking my face. On a more serious note, does anyone have any advice on trimming claws (not getting him declawed)?

Re: I got a cat
You can get a claw trimmer at Petsmart / Petco for about $10. You're basically going to have to sit on the cat and hold each paw while you trim. Keep scratching posts/boxes around scented with catnip, so they can scratch and help keep their claws under control. We did this with our cat for about a year till he got into our $4000 (don't get any ideas, we didn't pay that much for it..) rug even tho the scratching post was 3 feet away. It was worth the $130 to have the front claws removed. Cats protect themselves with their hind claws, and we would never leave our cat defenseless in the off chance he was out in the wild alone.

I got the $10 nail cutter and have a scratching post, I completely wrap her in a towel, pull out a paw and clip. She HATES it.
Tell Murray CB said "Sup?".

Re: I got a cat
I've learned that doing it when they are awake isn't as easy and well you always don't have another person around to hold them. So I wait for Leroy to take one of his long naps and when he's been snoozing awhile or you know when he's chilled out pretty well then go in for the snip snip. I've been doing this for years now and over time he has gotten use to it and makes my job alot easier and isnt a tramatic experience for him.
The trick is finding the spot to clip, I've cut to far and made him bleed when I first started but if you look at the nail you will see where the nail ends and where there is a cuticle? If your cat has clear nails you will see where you need to stop before making your cat bleed everywhere . A good trick we do with the scratching post is whenever Leroy uses it we give him a treat and praise him. Now he's additcted to doing it .
